About Us
What Are LOLER Examinations?
LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, a UK statutory requirement designed to make sure all lifting equipment used in the workplace is safe and fit for purpose. Under Regulation 9 of LOLER, lifting equipment must undergo a thorough examination at regular intervals by a competent person.
This isn’t just good practice — it’s a legal obligation for employers, duty holders and equipment owners. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), fines, or increased injury risk.
Meet your legal obligations under UK health & safety law
Avoid enforcement notices, prosecution or fines by ensuring your equipment is inspected within required timeframes and properly certified.
Reduce the risk of accidents and injuries on site
Identifying worn components, structural defects, or safety mechanism failures before they lead to serious incidents.
What We Do
Delivering Quality from Start to Finish.
Step 1 – Initial Consultation & Booking
The process begins with a conversation about your equipment and operational requirements. We establish what type of machinery requires examination, whether it is used to lift people or loads, and when it was last inspected.
Step 2 – Thorough On-Site Examination
During the inspection, a detailed and methodical assessment of the lifting equipment is carried out by a competent inspector. This is not a quick visual check — it is a structured examination designed to assess the safety, stability and integrity of the machine.
Step 3 – Defect Identification & Assessment
If any issues are identified during the examination, they are clearly documented and categorised according to their severity. Minor defects that do not pose an immediate risk are recorded with recommendations for corrective action.
Step 4 – Documentation & Certification
Following the inspection, a formal LOLER Thorough Examination Report is produced. This document provides a clear record of the inspection findings and confirms whether the equipment meets compliance standards.
Overdue for LOLER Certification?
Avoid downtime and enforcement issues. We offer fast, flexible inspection appointments across Yorkshire and Lancashire.
MEWP & Lifting Equipment LOLER Examinations
At JB Powered Access, we specialise in LOLER Examinations for all types of MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) and lifting equipment across Yorkshire and Lancashire. Whether you operate a single access platform or manage a fleet of machines, we provide professional, fully documented inspections to keep your equipment safe and compliant.
MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) LOLER Inspections
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms are widely used across construction, maintenance, utilities and industrial sectors. Because they lift personnel at height, they fall under strict LOLER requirements.
Scissor Lift LOLER Examinations
Scissor lifts are commonly used for vertical access work indoors and outdoors. Due to their lifting function, they require a LOLER inspection every six months.
Cherry Picker Inspections
Cherry pickers — whether self-propelled, trailer-mounted, or truck-mounted — are subject to LOLER regulations because they lift personnel at height.
Forklift LOLER Examinations
Forklifts used for lifting loads fall under LOLER regulations and require annual thorough examination. If used to lift personnel with an approved attachment, the inspection interval may be every six months.
Telehandler Inspections
Telehandlers are widely used on construction and agricultural sites for lifting and positioning loads. As lifting equipment, they require periodic LOLER examination.

LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. These regulations require lifting equipment used in the workplace to be thoroughly examined at regular intervals by a competent person to ensure it is safe to operate
Yes. If you use lifting equipment for work purposes, a LOLER Examination is a legal requirement under UK health and safety law. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action, fines, invalidated insurance or prosecution in serious cases.
In most cases:
Equipment used to lift people must be examined every 6 months.
Equipment used to lift loads must be examined every 12 months.
Examinations are also required after installation, major repairs, relocation, or exceptional events such as overloading or accidents.
A LOLER Examination must be carried out by a competent person — someone with the appropriate knowledge, experience and understanding of lifting equipment and the relevant regulations. It cannot simply be signed off by anyone; it must be performed by someone qualified to assess safety and compliance properly.
A LOLER Examination includes a detailed inspection of structural components, hydraulic and mechanical systems, safety devices, and load-bearing elements. The inspector checks for wear, corrosion, cracks, damage and correct operation of safety mechanisms. A written report is then issued outlining findings and confirming compliance status.
If defects are identified, they will be clearly documented in the report. Minor defects may allow continued use with corrective action planned. Serious defects that pose an immediate risk may require the equipment to be removed from service until repairs are completed. Once remedial work is carried out, the equipment can be re-examined and certified.
